The Savannah Board of REALTORS have been work this month to continue a time-honored tradition of of fair housing to the community.
As part of National Fair Housing Month, members of SABOR and real estate agents across the country are continuing to uphold the Fair Housing ACt, which was established 37 years ago.
According to Goldie Little, SABOR president, Savannah Board of REALTORS members work daily with home buyers and sellers, and therefore play a vital role in advancing the Fair Housing laws. The National Association of REALTORS (NAR) fights discrimination and promotes equality through an award winning training program entitled "At Home with Diversity" which trains real estate professionals to work effectively with the diversity in today's market.
The course, given yearly by the Savannah Board, will be presented again September 15.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is celebrating the 37th anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act. Each April, HUD commemorates this occasion and celebrates the strides it has made in furthering this landmark civil rights law.
The 2005 Fair Housing Month theme is "Fostering Secure and Diverse Communities." This year's theme is particularly relevant, given the changing face of America's communities.
Once separated by race and religion, today's neighborhoods are multicultural, where people of every color and background share a common goal of building a better future for their families.
Central to their pursuit is the ability to exercise the freedoms guaranteed under civil rights laws such as the Fair Housing Act. The Act ensures that every person, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, or family status (the presence of children under 18) can obtain the housing of their choice. What's more, the Act promotes the establishment of safe and secure communities where everyone, regardless of nationality, can live free from discrimination.
Throughout Fair Housing Month, HUD events will focus on how fair housing can help foster diverse communities. These events will augment the activities that conducted throughout the year and will bring together government agencies, fair housing organizations, and community groups in furthering the goal of creating safe, secure, and diverse communities.
Little said the Ethics Course which is a requirement for all new agents, and must be completed by all agents at least once every four years contains the importance of fair housing.
Opportunities to take these courses are provided throughout the state and at National Association of REALTOR conventions.
