T he ceremony held in April to award scholarships to the two winners of the Womenıs Council of Realtorsı (WCR) essay contest marked the beginning of a significant community program for the club. Coming soon is the anchor event to fund the 2006 scholarships established to benefit graduating seniors from area high schools.
The club donated the seed funding for the first scholarships so that this important community-development project could proceed without delay. Alyssa Aikens of Hershel V. Jenkins High School and Laurell Taylor of Savannah Arts Academy received the first two scholarships for their essays submitted to answer the question, ³How Does A Realtor Professional Benefit The Community?²
The second contest will award scholarships to four seniors, giving more area students the opportunity to be rewarded for their achievements and to further pursue their higher education plans. ³The topic for the essay contest for the coming year has not yet been announced,² explained Lynda Adamson, the projectıs originator and coordinator, ³but it will be something that deals with the way the real estate industry impacts the community.²
The contribution of the contest developed by WCR Savannah to the betterment of studentsı academic activities runs parallel to the organizationıs contribution to its members through is operating values. These values are based on providing a support network, building relationships, developing career excellence, participating in productive change, and celebrating differences.
The Womenıs Council of Realtors Scholarship Tennis Tournament will be held August 27 & 28, 2005, from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., at The Franklin Creek Tennis Center at The Landings on Skidaway Island. On Saturday, Mixed Doubles will play, and Sundayıs event will feature Doubles play.
Entrance fee is $25 per player for the first event and $40 per player for both events. The entrance fee includes balls, T-shirts, and refreshments. To register, call Trish Huene at (912) 598-3754; credit cards accepted.
The club urges all area tennis players to participate, promising a fun and competitive weekend. League players and those who just love to play can enjoy the sport while helping young graduating seniors pave the way toward college.
This important program makes a significant contribution to area high-school seniors by helping them pursue academic studies. Knowing that education leads to personal betterment, the club has made a commitment to awarding these scholarships. With home ownership being a primary goal of most individuals, it is through personal achievement that this goal is realized.
