SUMMARY: Southwest Middle School opened in 1998 at a cost of about $13 million. About 59 teachers work there. Like West Chatham Middle, Southwest is a clone of Coastal Middle, the islands school that opened in 1997. The building is about 128,000 square feet. The school offers core academic subjects and exploratory courses in the arts and other subjects. Students currently benefit from an outdoor wetlands classroom project.
