HISTORY: Bartlett Middle School stands on the former site of Haven Home School, one of Savannah's early African-American public schools. From 1886-1917, Haven Home School was an industrial training facility owned by the Women's Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1933, the society sold Haven to public school officials for $5,000. The stipulation was that the building "must be operated as a negro school for as long as possible." At one time, the school had an enrollment of 800 African-American students. The site later became the home of Bartlett Middle School.
