SCHOOL SUMMARY: Bartow Elementary School was named after Francis S. Bartow, the first Confederate General to be killed in the Civil War.
The school opened in 1963 at a cost of $371,417 with 632 school students. In the vernacular of the day, it was called a "negro school."
In 1971, the school was desegregated through a court-ordered busing program, stemming form an ongoing desegregation suit. In 1988, after busing ended, Bartow would have reverted back to a virtually all-black school. But it became a magnet academy for gifted children under another desegregation plan, and quickly achieved its integration goal. Since 1990, the school has been within district desegregation guidelines. Bartow's most recent expansion was in 1994, at a cost of about $4 million.
The school offers chorus, has an elementary mathematic olympiad team, annual science fair and National Geographic Geography Bee.
Bartow's magnet program is The Gifted and Talented Academy, designed to meet the needs of scholarly students in grades K-5. Critical thinking and problem solving are emphasized across the curriculum. Students are exposed to multi-media learning; computer instruction; educational television; simulation activities and multi-sensory materials.
The program provides instruction in mathematics, social studies, science, health and language arts. Students receive Spanish instruction daily. A full-time science teacher offers a comprehensive science program for grades K-5 in a fully equipped laboratory.
The school requires its magnet teachers that teach gifted students to be certified in gifted instruction.
Bartow opened in 1964 and was expanded in 1994.
