SCHOOL SUMMARY: Butler Elementary School was named after teacher and principal James H.C. Butler (1852-1921), the first African American in Chatham County to have a public school named after him, according a 1994 project done by Butler students and past reports.
The westside school is the home of "Bearsville," an imaginary small town that puts students to work as merchants, politicians, journalists, police, etc. -- all kinds of mock occupations designed to teach students about the real world.
The school also offers a storytelling troupe, an award-winning newspaper, satellite communications, student-manned closed-circuit television training and two computer-assisted instruction programs.
