HISTORY: Coastal Middle School on Whitemarsh Island opened in 1997. At that time, it was the first new middle school in the Savannah-Chtham Public Schools system in 34 years. The $9 million, 128,000-square-foot school features a gymnasium and at least 42 classrooms, including rooms for art, band, chorus, computers, technical education, business and home economics. Team sports include basketball, football, soccer, track and softball. A cafetorium features a combined cafeteria and auditorium. The school also has three separate "houses" for each grade level, at the center of which are common areas decorated by staff and students. The middle of the school has an open courtyard suitable for outside classes.
