Gadsden retired in 1947 after more than 50 years as a teacher and principal. His education and early professional background included graduation from Atlanta University and teaching experience in Delaware. In the early 1900s, he returned to Savannah, where he played a major role in stabilizing a once-organized African-American school system.
Gadsden Elementary School was recently named as one of 10 schools in the state to be the recipient of a SCANA homework center. At the center, Gadsden students receive help with their class assignments and learn new study skills.
The Performing and Fine Arts Academy magnet program at the school caters to students interested in dancing, art and music. An interdisciplinary curriculum is taught by teachers who use art, music, movement and drama techniques to teach academic subjects. Students are also exposed to ballet, symphony orchestra, theater, puppetry, sculpting, and painting.
