SCHOOL SUMMARY: Garrison Elementary School, which opened in the early 1990s, was named for the late Esther Garrison, who served on the Savannah-Chatham County Board of Education for 20 years and was known for her efforts to integrate the city's schools. She was appointed to the board in 1965 as one of its first black members.
The school's magnet program offers specialized instruction in the study of plants and animals. The learning environment features classroom containing a garden laboratory program, animals, aquariums and Internet access. Curriculum includes weekly hands-on science activities in a lab setting. Outdoor classrooms include three courtyards, a greenhouse, wildlife habitat and garden plots. Students also go camping, "adopt" streams and beaches, and go on overnight visits to local environmental education camps.
