SCHOOL SUMMARY:Gould Elementary was named after the late Carrie E. Gould, a local teacher and principal who spent nearly 50 years here as an educator.
In the late 1800s, the Gould family -- said to be wealthy plantation owners -- donated land to the Board of Education on which the Bethel School was built, according to past reports.
Gould taught children at the small schoolhouse until the '20s, when the student population outgrew the school. For a time, classes were taught at the Gould residence.
Gould retired in 1937 and died in 1960.
In the late '50s, Bethel and other area one-room schoolhouses were consolidated into the "Silk Hope School" (on the site of the old Silk Hope Plantation) and renamed the Carrie E. Gould School in her honor, according to past reports.
