Heard, who had a 28-year career in the Chatham County public school system, was assistant superintendent of schools when she retired in 1949.
Her career started in 1921 when she became commissioner of the Massie School. In 1923, she became assistant to the superintendent of schools and in 1926, became secretary to the Board of Education.
After becoming assistant superintendent of schools in 1933, she spent 16 years in the position.
During her career, she was also noted for her work in the public school health program, the lunch room program and for her efforts to improve rural schools in the county.
At one time, Heard was the only female vice president of Telfair Academy and the only female chairman of the board of managers of the Savannah Public Library.
