SCHOOL SUMMARY: Hesse Elementary School opened in the early 1960s. It was named after the late Dr. Herman W. Hesse, who spent more than 30 years being involved in Chatham County's public education system. Hesse, who was elected a Massie School commissioner in 1908, was appointed to the Chatham County Board of Education and served until 1940, excluding the years 1936-38. A native of Savannah, Hesse began practicing as a physician here in 1901. He was known for his contributions toward improving the health of children, including giving free medical exams.
