SCHOOL SUMMARY: Hodge Elementary School was named after philanthropist Sarah Mills Hodge, a 1930s liberal who spent much of her life trying to better circumstances for African Americans in Savannah.
During her lifetime, Hodge supported several agencies for the betterment of Savannah African Americans. Her benevolences included the former Mills Memorial Home; Hodge Memorial Kindergarten and Day Nursery; all of which she established.
She continued her work after her death. In her will, she left several thousand dollars to local charities, including the Frank Callen Boys Club, Inc.
The Board of Education decided to name the school after Hodge in appreciation for her philanthropy. Hodge opened in the late 50s as a school for African Americans.
The magnet program at Hodge is the Computer Technology and Engineering Academy. It offers an instructional program that focuses on computer technology, a laboratory-based science program and education in engineering principles and concepts.
