SUMMARY: Oglethorpe Academy, a charter middle school, opened in August 1999 as the first independent, start-up middle school of its type in Georgia. In the past, the state had allowed only existing public schools to become charter schools. But 1998 legislation allowed community groups to create their own schools from scratch. The academy was the second school in the state to receive charter status under the 1998 legislation.
The academy promises to offer an innovative education to middle schoolers by offering more interesting and practical classes, strong community volunteerism and a diverse mix of students, teachers and parents. It requires parents to sign a contract pledging their involvement. There is also a strong focus on Core Knowledge and character education.
The school is located at the former Pearl Smith Elementary School on Stiles Avenue, but is expected to move to a bigger location in future years.
