SCHOOL SUMMARY: Thunderbolt Elementary was named after the community in which it is located, a former fishing village on the Wilmington River. The town itself was named for an old legend that a lightning bolt shattered a rock near the river bluff years ago, causing a spring to rush from the ground. In the 1920s and 30s, Thunderbolt was known as a lucrative place for fisherman, particularly shrimpers. But as the shrimp supply dried up in the 70s and 80s, so did much of the town's fishing industry.
Today, a handful of Thunderbolt-based fisherman work from the tiny Wilmington River port, and the town's seafaring heritage is remembered by a fisherman's memorial.
