SCHOOL SUMMARY:Eli Whitney Elementary School was built in the mid 1950s, and named after Eli Whitney, credited with inventing the cotton gin in 1793.
For years, other inventors tried unsuccessfully to create a machine that would separate cotton lint from the seed, but it was Whitney who finally achieved success. His invention significantly impacted the economic trend of the United States with the revitalization of slavery, since workers were needed to plant more cotton.
Savannah was incorporated as a city in 1789, and sprang into eminence as a cotton center after the gin was invented at Mulberry Grove Plantation in what is now Port Wentworth. The plantation was the home of revolutionary war hero General Nathanael Greene, where Whitney worked as a teacher.
